New version of ifm’s optical distance sensor for level measurement

On the level - with a light touch!

Since the launch if the successful O1D optical distance sensor by market leader ifm electronic many users have realised that it is a cost-effective way of measuring levels. Using a visible laser beam the distance sensor measures a distance up to 10 m using the time-of-flight principle. So looking down at a surface is no problem, as long as that surface can reflect the laser.

Now ifm electronic has released a version optimised for level detection. The O1D300 uses the same award-winning PMD technology (Photonic Mixer Device) to provide a particularly compact design (42 x 42 x 52 mm) but now the firmware allows a reference level, such as the bottom of a tank, to be selected, and the level above that displayed.
At the same time the level value can be provided via a scalable analogue output (4...20 mA), together with a switched output, or two switched signals, with window function, can be chosen.

Two buttons and a simple menu guidance enable easy and precise setting of all parameters, and with its unbeatable price, long range and flexible installation the O1D300 is an alternative to conventional ultrasonic sensors while offering a sensing concept better suited to many containers. The only proviso is that the material will reflect the light and is not too dusty.

Operating on 18 to 36V DC the device is fitted with an industry standard M12 connector and has an IP rating of 65.
