O1D optical distance sensor from ifm electronic sees even further Even outdoor installations are no problem for the latest version of sensor market leader ifm electronic’s O1D optical laser distance sensor. Able to withstand extraneous light levels up to 100 klx (equivalent to a bright sunny day), the new version needs to be able to work outside because it has a range of up to 75 m to a prismatic reflector. Like earlier units, this new version, the O1D106, utilizes ifm electronic’s award-winning pmd chip, an innovative method of calculating distance by time-of-flight all on one chip. This keeps the dimensions of the sensor to a minimum and keeps the cost down, while still offering tremendous performance. In a robust diecast housing only 42mm wide by 45mm high and 52mm deep, the O1D has already proved a roaring success in its first 10m range versions. It provides the user with two selectable switchpoints, or a single switched output combined with a scalable analogue signal. Described by academics as “a genuine breakthrough innovation” at the Hannover Fair, the pmd sensor has certainly fulfilled its promise. Companies worldwide have reaped the benefits of this versatile optical device. All O1D versions are fitted with the standard M12 industrial connector, and feature a four-digit LED display panel on the top of the unit, next to the setting buttons. To help installation and alignment there is also a range of useful accessories.
